Wound Care Series— Session 7: Non Healing & Palliative Wounds

Topic: This session focuses on the assessment and management of non-healing and palliative wounds, with practical guidance on providing comfort-focused, evidence-informed care in long-term care settings. Participants will build confidence in recognizing when wound healing may no longer be the primary goal, and in applying strategies to manage pain, prevent infection, control odor and exudate, and support dignity and quality of life through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Who should attend: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and clinical leaders involved in wound assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing skin and wound care in nursing homes.

Peer Learning & Collaboration Across New Brunswick Nursing Homes

Community of Practice meetings bring staff together from across New Brunswick nursing homes to share experiences, discuss real-world challenges, and learn from one another in a supportive, peer-led environment. These sessions provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen practice, and build connections with colleagues working in similar roles across the province.

Rehabilitation Assistant Community of Practice

The first Community of Practice for the Rehabilitation Assistant role took place on January 31st and was a great success, with 50 nursing homes registered from across the province. These sessions provide an opportunity for rehabilitation assistants to connect, exchange ideas, and strengthen practice in long-term care.
 
The Community of Practice for the Rehabilitation Assistant role supports collaboration, shared learning, and ongoing practice development in long-term care. These sessions provide an opportunity for rehabilitation assistants to connect with peers across the province, discuss challenges, and share practical approaches that strengthen resident care and outcomes.

LTCF-RAI Coordinator Community of Practice

Launching in May 2026, this new group is specifically designed for the LTCF-RAI Coordinator in your long term care facility. This group will meet four times a year and focus on: 

  • Peer learning 
  • Consistency in practice 
  • Addressing challenges related to the RAI role

New Brunswick Long Term Care Nursing Leadership Foundations Course - ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

Currently accepting applications for May 2026

This course was previously known as the Director of Nursing in Long Term Care Course (2020-2022). 

This course bridges the gap between competent nurse to successful nurse leader in a long-term care setting within New Brunswick.  This foundational course provides direction to licensed nurses as they begin their career in leadership in long term care. The content is divided into discovery units that explore key skills and includes practical homework each week that involves skill translation through practical application. 

In addition to the personal skills acquisition, the weekly course cohort becomes a cohesive group of nurse leaders with similar goals and attributes that act as a resource for each other moving forward. The impact of this peer support cannot be underestimated as these nurse leaders navigate the responsibilities of the role in their individual home. 

  • Classes are taught online using Zoom video conferencing, class may be recorded for participants if they are unable to attend.
  • Classes are held weekly over twelve weeks (12 classes)
  • Currently accepting applications for English course instruction only

This course is funded under the New Brunswick Nursing Home Learning Campus with free tuition for all licensed nurses in formal leadership roles in New Brunswick Long Term Care homes.

Introduction to Long Term Care and Support Services Management in New Brunswick

General Overview:
This introductory course is designed for managers of support service departments to introduce the long-term care system in New Brunswick and principles of supervision, leadership, human resource management and staff engagement.

  • Designed for support service managers or supervisors in nursing home settings including food service, recreation and activities, housekeeping, laundry and environmental service.
  • This intensive online course is done online in a group
  • The content is divided into discovery units that explore key skills and includes practical
    homework each week that involves skill translation through practical application.
  • Classes are taught online using Zoom video conferencing, class may be recorded for participants if they are unable to attend.
  • Classes are held weekly

This course is funded under the New Brunswick Nursing Home Learning Campus with free tuition for all support service managers working in leadership roles in New Brunswick nursing homes.

New Brunswick Nursing Home Administrator Course

This course is funded under the New Brunswick Nursing Home Learning Campus with free tuition for all Administrators  in New Brunswick nursing homes. 

This comprehensive course is designed for current and aspiring leaders in the nursing home sector, offering a deep dive into the essential knowledge, skills, and strategies required to excel in the dynamic field of long-term care management. Participants will gain actionable insights and practical tools to drive improvements, foster innovation, and ensure the highest standards of care.

Duration: 14 classes
Format: Virtual sessions via Zoom

This course is funded under the New Brunswick Nursing Home Learning Campus with free tuition for all Administrators  in New Brunswick nursing homes.

New Brunswick LPN Rehabilitation Course

To provide advanced competency training to bridge the entry level competencies of Licensed Practical Nurse to the fulfill the role of LPN Rehabilitation Assistant in long term care facilities in New Brunswick. This role involves understanding and collaborating with the following specialties to optimize functioning for the resident of the nursing home: 

  • Speech Language Pathology (swallowing and communication referral requests) 
  • Physiotherapy 
  • Occupational Therapy 
  • Audiology  
  • Dietician (including nutrition and adaptive aids) 
  • Hybrid model including online learning and onsite preceptorship with a mentor 
  • Theory Classes: 36 hours 
    • 12 course modules that include pre-recorded videos, readings and assignments using an online learning management program  
    • Minimum grade of 70% on all assignments is required to receive credit for course 
  • Preceptorship: 36 hours 
    • Supervised preceptorship with mentors working the role currently
    • 36 hours in total (over a minimum of five days onsite) 
  • Students have twelve months from date of registration to complete all course components (theory and preceptorship)

Long Term Care Clinical Shift Supervisor Training - ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

This foundational course provides direction to clinical shift supervisors in long term care settings. The target audience is RN’s and LPN’s working in long term care settings.

  • Designed for nurses with duties related to staff oversight and unit supervision
  • Information is targeted to staff who have supervisory duties in their daily workload
