The New Brunswick Nursing Home Learning Campus, proudly launched by Beacon Clinical Group and funded by the Department of Social Development, is an innovative learning platform created to support nursing home professionals. Our mission is simple: to enhance skills, foster leadership, and improve the quality of care for residents in long-term care facilities across New Brunswick.

We’re more than just a program – we’re a community of learning and collaboration. The Learning Campus is specifically designed to address the needs of nursing home employees based on the Learning Needs Assessment conducted earlier this year.

New Brunswick Long Term Care Nursing Leadership Foundations Course

This foundational course provides direction to licensed nurses as they begin their career in leadership in long term care. The content is divided into discovery units that explore key skills and includes practical homework each week that involves skill translation through practical application.

Introduction to Long Term Care and Support Services Management in New Brunswick

This introductory course is designed for managers of support service departments to introduce the long-term care system in New Brunswick and principles of supervision, leadership, human resource management and staff engagement.

New Brunswick Nursing Home Administrator Course

This comprehensive course is designed for leaders in the nursing home sector, offering a deep dive into the essential knowledge, skills, and strategies required to excel in the dynamic field of long-term care management. Meet The Team

Amy McNair

Amy is a dedicated Occupational Therapist who specializes in long-term care consulting and direct care for adults in residential settings across New Brunswick. Her approach is deeply collaborative, as she works closely with clients, their caregivers, and medical professionals to ensure that custom care plans enrich the lives of those served.

She blends health science with personal connection to help clients engage in meaningful daily activities.

Each day, Amy navigates the complexities of long-term care while advocating for meaningful improvements to our daily practices, facilities, and services. With over twenty-one years of experience, the most fulfilling aspect of her role is engaging with clients and celebrating their unique stories. By co-creating tailored solutions beyond simple fixes, Amy illustrates how Occupational Therapy can transform lives through a blend of expertise and compassion.

Nancy Schuttenbeld

With over 33 years of nursing experience Nancy is passionate about wound and skin care in the elder population. Nancy has been employed as a Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Care (NSWOC) for over a decade. This position provides clinical care, consultation to patients, families, nurses, physicians and all other…

…health care members on wound, ostomy and continence issues at six hospitals and long term care facilities in Area 3, New Brunswick. Prior to this position she was employed as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Horizon Health Network. She has led pressure injury studies for over 15 years and is currently a member of the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel. In addition to Pressure Injury Prevention initiatives, she has been involved in a variety of quality improvement initiatives including streamlining wound care products from home care to in-patient and resident facilities provincially.

She has led annual wound conferences for over 16 years, biyearly wound resource workshops and loves teaching and believes in lifelong learning.
She has volunteered on numerous local, provincial and national organizations including board Director for Atlantic Canada for NSWOC National. She has presented locally, provincially and nationally on pain, wound care, pressure injury prevention and more. In June 2024 she launched her private practice Skin Wellness RN. Her passions include pressure injury prevention and pain management in wound care. She resides in Fredericton NB and loves reading, running, cycling and most importantly her three grown children AJ, Carter and Rachel.

April Connor

April Connor has been an integral member of the Loch Lomond Villa family in Saint John since 2011. Initially joining as a Personal Support Worker while pursuing her Bachelor of Nursing, April has ascended through various roles over the last decade as a Registered Nurse. Now serving as the RAI Coordinator since the launch of Momentum in New Brunswick in 2017…

…she leverages her extensive experience and dedication to quality improvement to enhance care for the residents. With a passion for excellence in long-term care, April continuously fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation in her nursing practice. April frequently consults other provinces, and national initiatives to further define quality and aligns Loch Lomond Villa policies and processes with national best practices in her role. In addition to her role as the InterRAI Coordinator, April serves on the Accreditation Committee, focusing on clinical quality of care, the Integrated Quality Management Committee, leading the dissemination of data analysis and interpretation for improvement, and also serves her colleagues through her participation on the Care for the Caregiver Committee.

Deeply passionate about mentoring aspiring healthcare professionals, April exemplifies dedication in her work and contribution to improving long term care. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys the invigorating chase of a good run and is the Program Lead for the volunteer program called NODA (No One Dies Alone), ensuring that every individual is comforted during life’s final moments.

Odette Comeau Lavoie

Odette Comeau Lavoie is a Registered Nurse. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the Université de Moncton in 1988 and later completed a Masters in Adult Education at St Francis Xavier University in 2008. Originally from Néguac NB where she began her nursing career, Ms Comeau Lavoie lived in Fredericton for 25 years before semi-retiring in Charlotte County.

Ms Comeau Lavoie worked briefly in hospital before finding a niche in Public Health where she worked for 16 years in both rural and urban settings. Her interest in quality improvement and policy development provided a springboard for her work as a regulatory consultant with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick where she worked in nursing regulation for 12 years. In 2017, she began employment as Principal Nursing Advisor with the Department of Health where she provided consult to the department on all nursing related affairs until her retirement in 2021. 

Ms Comeau Lavoie continues to provide professional and competent nursing consultation in her work with Beacon Clinical Group. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team and is fluently bilingual.

The Learning Campus is open to all long-term care professionals in New Brunswick, including frontline caregivers, leadership teams, administrators, and support staff who want to enhance their skills and knowledge.

The Learning Campus provides specialized courses for new and emerging leaders, interactive workshops, case studies, and practical resources focused on professional development and improving resident care.

All courses and resources are offered through the user-friendly iTacit online platform, providing an engaging, accessible, and interactive learning experience. There will also be opportunities for live workshops, forums, and collaboration.

The Learning Campus officially launches on January 1st, 2025, and specialized leadership courses will begin in January  15th, 2025. Enrollment details can be found on the Beacon Clinical Group website.

The program is funded by the Department of Social Development and federal funding, making it accessible for all eligible long-term care professionals in New Brunswick.
