Introduction to Long Term Care and Support Services Management in New Brunswick

Course Overview:
This introductory course is designed for managers of support service departments to introduce the long-term care system in New Brunswick and principles of supervision, leadership, human resource management and staff engagement.  

  • Designed for support service managers or supervisors in nursing home settings including food service, recreation and activities, housekeeping, laundry and environmental service.  
  • This intensive online course is done a small group setting .  
  • The content is divided into discovery units that explore key skills and includes practical homework each week that involves skill translation through practical application.  

 Target Audience:

  • Non-clinical department managers in long term care in New Brunswick. This may include food service, recreation and activities, housekeeping, laundry and environmental service managers.
  • Students may either currently hold a leadership role or wish to transition into a leadership role in the near future.

Course Format and Dates: 

  • Classes are taught online using Zoom video conferencing, class may be recorded for participants if they are unable to attend. 
  • Classes are two hours in length on Tuesdays and alternate between morning and afternoon sessions  
  • Classes begin October 10th and continue until November 28th 

Course Facilitator:
This course is facilitated by Cheyanne Culbert, BN, RN, MN from Beacon Clinical Group. Cheyanne has over twenty years experience in long term care and is a skilled nurse educator. Cheyanne worked as a Director of Nursing in a NB nursing home and led a nursing care team to achieve Planetree Gold designation in person centered care. After completing her Masters Degree in Nursing Education with a focus on leadership in long term care, Cheyanne is committed to helping other leaders develop their leadership abilities in a supportive environment.

Course Cost:
Tuition is $1295 plus HST and payable before beginning the course. After the first class, there are no refunds on course tuition.

Course Expectations:
All participants are required to sign a confidentiality agreement before the first class to ensure that any discussions that occur in class are kept confidential. This allows participants to speak freely and share any current concerns or issues in a supportive environment. It is expected that participants make every effort to be in class each week. Virtual recordings will be provided if a participant is absent, but this is discouraged as the classes are very interactive. The link for web recordings will be valid for 7 days, password protected and encrypted to prevent downloading.

Course Grading/Completion:
Participants are required to attend class and complete the homework assignments to be given a credit for the course. The course is a pass/fail grading format and support from the instructor is provided to encourage student success. Upon successful completion of this course, students are awarded the certificate of “Introduction to Long Term Care and Support Services Management in New Brunswick”. This course can be credited towards greater certifications within Beacon Clinical Group, including the Leadership in Person Centered Care credential.

This class is taught online using Zoom video conferencing. Class intake and orientation occurs from June to September 2023. Classes  starting September 19 th , 2023

General Overview:
To provide advanced competency training to bridge the entry level competencies of Licensed Practical Nurse to the fulfill the role of LPN Rehabilitation Assistant in long term care facilities in New Brunswick. This role involves understanding and collaborating with the following specialties to optimize functioning for the resident of the nursing home:

  • Speech Language Pathology (swallowing and communication referral requests)
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Audiology
  • Dietician (including nutrition and adaptive aids)
 

Class Format and Dates: 
This course is broken into two learning methods – virtual and onsite. 36 hours of theory will be taught using online Zoom conferencing. An additional 36 hours will be taught through preceptorship.

This foundational course two-day online training provides direction to clinical shift supervisors in long term care settings. This intensive online course is done a small group setting with one facilitator.

Class Format and Dates: 

  • Classes are taught online using Zoom video conferencing over 2 days
  • Workshop is offered three times this Fall 2023, choose from one of the following:
    • September Workshop: September 13th and 14th from 9am to 3pm FULL
    • October Workshop: October 18th and 19th from 9am to 3pm FULL 
    • November Workshop: November 8th and 9th from from 9am to 3pm STILL ACCEPTING REGISTRANTS

This intensive online course is done a small group setting with one facilitator for the duration of the course. The content is divided into discovery units that explore key
skills and includes practical homework each week that involves skill translation through practical application.

Class Format and Dates: 

  • Classes are taught online using Zoom video conferencing, class may be recorded for participants if they are unable to attend.
  • Classes begin January 2024 
  • Classes are held on Thursday mornings from 10am to 12noon
  • Classes will be recorded for students who are unable to attend. A weblink with the video recording for class will be emailed to the group, the weblink will be active for 14 days.
