New Brunswick Long Term Care Nursing Leadership Foundations Course

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course bridges the gap between competent nurse to successful nurse leader in a long-term care setting within New Brunswick.  This foundational course provides direction to licensed nurses as they begin their career in leadership in long term care. The content is divided into discovery units that explore key skills and includes practical homework each week that involves skill translation through practical application.

In addition to the personal skills acquisition, the weekly course cohort becomes a cohesive group of nurse leaders with similar goals and attributes that act as a resource for each other moving forward. The impact of this peer support cannot be underestimated as these nurse leaders navigate the responsibilities of the role in their individual home.

Target Audience:

    • Licensed nurses in formal leadership roles in long term care settings. This may include Directors of Nursing, Assistant Directors of Nursing, Resource Nurses, Clinical Supervisors, Nurse Managers, Unit Supervisors etc.
  • Students may either currently hold a leadership role or wish to transition into a leadership role

Course Format:

  • Classes are taught online using Zoom video conferencing, class may be recorded for participants if they are unable to attend.
  • Classes are held weekly over twelve weeks

Course Facilitator:

This course is facilitated by Cheyanne Culbert, BN, RN, MN from Beacon Clinical Group. Cheyanne has over twenty years’ experience in long term care and is a skilled nurse educator. Cheyanne worked as a Director of Nursing in a NB nursing home and led a nursing care team to achieve Planetree Gold designation in person centered care.  Having been a teaching faculty member at the University of New Brunswick, Cheyanne recognized the knowledge and skill gap from the BN program to a leadership position in long term care when she made this transition in her own career. After completing her Master’s Degree in Nursing Education with a focus on leadership in long term care, Cheyanne is committed to helping other nurse leaders bridge this learning gap in a supportive environment.

Course Expectations:

All participants are required to sign a confidentiality agreement before the first class to ensure that any discussions that occur in class are kept confidential. This allows participants to speak freely and share any current concerns or issues in a supportive environment.

It is expected that participants make every effort to be in class each week. Virtual recordings will be provided if a participant is absent, but this is discouraged as the classes are very interactive. The link for web recordings will be valid for 7 days and then deleted.

Course Grading/Completion:

Participants are required to attend class and complete the homework assignments to be given a credit for the course. The course is a pass/fail grading format and support from the instructor is provided to encourage student success.

Upon successful completion of this course, students are awarded the certificate of “New Brunswick Long Term Care Nursing Leadership Foundations Course”.
